In the news for the last week, there has been a lot of coverage about the devastating wildfires that have been occurring in California.
And over the last month or so, there has been a watch on a tropical storm to see if it will get to hurricane strength or not.
In the spring there will be news about people piling sandbags on the side of the Mississippi River to help slow the flooding that will be happening.
Also in the spring, we will have stories about tornados hitting the midwest and Texas areas.
Every year, year after year, these stories keep reoccurring. What I find very interesting is that the people effected by these things generally end up moving right back in the areas that will be effected by these same disasters a year later. I never really quite understood that.
I’m sure it has a lot to do with familiarity and their comfort zone.
The one thing I have stopped being for people that go back to an area that will be hit by the same natural phenomenon is sympathetic.
People have this tendency when it comes to their habits as well.
They lose the 30 pounds only to gain it all back a year later.
They get to work on time everyday for a month only to tardy three days after that and the pattern begins again.
Why is it that someone goes back to doing the same things that they know are not right for them?
It all has to do with their habitual way of thinking and acting.
Most people will start with the action before they get the thinking part down. But you have to do it concurrently. You have to start taking action but you also have to get the thinking part of it solidified in order for the actions to stick.
Lee Milteer explores this brilliantly in her great program, The Habit Busting System.
